Thank You to all current teachers, retired teachers and to all those teachers who came before! I think it’s great that there is a week every May officially dedicated to celebrating and appreciating teachers.
The PTA started this celebration back in 1984 and they are still at it today. Walking through a Barnes & Noble this time of year warms my heart because of all the visuals and promotions celebrating teachers. It’s also encouraging that you can do a web search for “teacher appreciation 2021 discounts,” and yield some impressive results.
An official week appreciating teachers is a really great start! I think there should actually be a teacher appreciation month. What do you think? We Are Teachers agrees with me. They are actually running a month long campaign of contests and great giveaways. You might not know this, but there are a lot of companies and service providers that offer deals and discounts to teachers all year long. Check out this post on Business Insider to learn more.
In an ideal world we wouldn’t need a holiday to prompt us to take time to say thank you to a teacher. In an ideal world we would value teachers, treat them with respect and compensate them accordingly. In an ideal world teachers wouldn’t need to work three jobs to pay their bills and support their family. In an ideal world teachers wouldn’t have to buy their students classroom supplies with their own money. I could go on and on.
We have written numerous posts highlighting the current state of education in America and the looming crisis that is quickly approaching. There is a gathering storm on the horizon, but we won’t focus on that in this post.
Are a teacher who is reading this post? If so, I hope you felt appreciated this week. I hope you felt valued and that your heart was full of warmth and joy at least once this week. (I hope this for you everyday) Did you receive something really special from a parent or a student? Is there something that you wish you received?
If you are not a teacher, did you do something special to appreciate a teacher in your life? If you didn’t , it’s not too late. You don’t have to buy something to say thank you. I was reminded of that truth after reading this Forbes post by Peter Greene. Sometimes a simple note of gratitude is worth more than anything you can buy in a store.
Thank you Teachers! What you do matters!
